Wild Cat Couloir

Ever since our last tour up Mount Roosevelt, Trevor and I have talked about skiing the couloir off the west side, dubbing it Wild Cat Couloir. The weather forecast was for the usual gray skies, influencing a later start since sun softened snow didn’t seem like a concern. The clouds never came out and as we skinned across Snow Lake, we wondered whether Roosevelt would be too slushy to get up. Conditions felt fine, and we booted up the narrow section towards the top, taking a long break to enjoy the sun.

Peering into the couloir (our last trip we didn’t get a good view), we found a nice mellow slope that reminded us of Great Scott Bowl, albeit with a steeper entrance and less wide. The ski was nice, although the snow quality was somewhat lacking. At the bottom we made our way along a stream until reaching Wild Cat Lake, and after another lengthy rest, made the ascent out past Wright Mountain and across the Snow Lake, calling it the Snow Desert due to the unexpected heat and the mirage of the last skin out at the end of the Lake.
