Kendall Lakes

Desperate to go ski touring around the Pass, Trevor and I ventured out from Hyak and took the forest service road up towards Kendall Lakes. We knew there would be very little, if any skiing, but I was itching to get out and didn't feel like a long drive down to Rainier or up North.

The skinning was fine, although the road is a lot longer than I remembered and once near the end of the road, Trevor decided to head back due to his brand spanking new boots not fitting properly. Seduced by the dream of possible turns above Kendall Lakes, I ventured off the road and through the forest. It was painful skinning, as not enough coverage meant I had to navigate around every possible obstacle. Reaching the second lake, I decided it was time to turn around, and got a couple of turns on the way back.

Tired and reaching the road, I took off my skins and began the ski down. Or at least that is what I thought I was going to do. I was using my K2 launchers, and the bases were plastered with glue from my skins, from this trip and previous ones. I had to skate 2 miles back to the car, and at one point I tried to put my skins back on as snow was sticking to my skis and making it very difficult to skate down. Finally, I resorted to using Glob Stopper on the base of my skis in lieu of real wax, and had to apply it about 20 different times on the way down. What a day...
